A compelling tale of the life of an 18th-century servant. Part thriller, part romance, it is narrated in raw, realistic detail, with beautiful touches of poetry.

The novel is beautifully and economically written with strong characterizations. All in all, this is a satisfying novel rich in historical detail with a sympathetic heroine battling to survive the injustices of the age.

"Written in the first person with a zippy narrative, I found the book practically turned the pages for me. Well edited, the voice is fresh and compelling.  I can see why this book was chosen by the Historical Writers' Association.  A well deserved win!
